Who we help at First Premier Bank, from retired service members to doctors and tech staff

First Premier Bank helps veterans with a pension and a TSP, physicians, dentists, tech professionals and others with $500K or more in investable assets.

Every group gets the same method: a short list of decisions in order of due date, each priced with real numbers before anything moves. Meetings run by video and by phone, so your zip code doesn't matter.

Veterans with a pension and a TSP

Most First Premier Bank clients in this group are a few years from leaving service or already in a second career. The pension shows up every month and the TSP sits quietly, but a handful of choices carry hard dates.

Take a hypothetical retired Army major with a $4,000 a month pension, which is $48,000 a year, who starts a $110,000 civilian job. Total income is $158,000. For 2026 the single Roth IRA phase-out runs from $153,000 to $168,000, so a full Roth contribution is no longer automatic. That's the kind of number we put on the table before anyone opens an account.

  • TSP to IRA rollover: we price the tax cost and the fund fees of a move before you sign anything.
  • Survivor Benefit Plan analysis: the election has a due date, and the premium math looks different for each spouse.
  • Military retirement planning: pension, savings and later income draws get lined up so they start in a sensible order.
  • Tax planning for veterans: second-career pay stacked on a pension can change your bracket, so we check it early.

Physicians and dentists

Doctors and dental officers who served, and civilians in the same fields, tend to start saving late and then earn a lot. The question is where the next dollar goes.

For 2026 the 401(k), 403(b) and TSP deferral limit is $24,500, against $7,500 for an IRA. We usually fill the bigger bucket first, then look at what's left. Sometimes that's a taxable account; sometimes it's paying down a loan. Both can be right.

Tech professionals

A veteran who moved into tech after service often holds RSUs or options on top of a TSP balance. One employer can end up paying your salary and carrying a big share of your savings.

If more than a fifth of what you own sits in one stock, diversifying usually comes before anything else. Before First Premier Bank suggests selling shares, we work out what the sale costs in tax. Every investment carries the risk of loss, including the money you started with, and one concentrated stock raises that risk.

Can I work with First Premier Bank if I don't fit a group?

Yes. The groups above are where we do the most thinking, not a gate. The minimum is $500K in investable assets, and that's the one hard line.

First Premier Bank serves 426,000 clients and $3.2 billion in client assets as of 10/19/2026. The office is in San Diego, and meetings are by video and by phone. Fees get talked through in the first conversation and confirmed in writing before any work starts. If you're under the minimum, we'd rather say so than waste your time.

Frequently asked questions about First Premier Bank

Do I need to be a veteran to become a First Premier Bank client?
No. First Premier Bank is open to anyone with $500K or more in investable assets. Veterans with a pension and a TSP are the reader this site is written for, but physicians, dentists, tech professionals and others are welcome too.
I'm a retired officer who now works in tech. Which group am I?
You're both, and that's common. We start with whichever decision has the nearest due date, often a TSP rollover or a Survivor Benefit Plan election, then turn to stock awards and second-career income. One list, one decision at a time.
Can I meet with an advisor if I live far from San Diego?
Yes. First Premier Bank works with clients nationwide, and meetings happen by video and by phone. The San Diego office exists, but you never need to visit it. To start, send a note through the request form on the site.
